Azkals End Their World Cup 2014 Campaign

Azkals bow down to Kuwait

The match between the Philippine Azkals and the Kuwait Al-Azraq concluded with the latter advancing to the third round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Angel Guirado and Phil Younghusband were not able to convert several attempts and passes during the early minutes of the second half.

In the 60th minute, Al Ebrahim was booked as he downed Chieffy Caligdong. Being his second yellow card, he was sent off the match. Philippines looking to capitalize a 10-man Kuwaiti squad, but Nasser Al Sulaiman equalized as he passed the challenge from Manny Ott in the 62nd minute.

A protest for a yellow card in the 72nd minute for Anton del Rosario resulted to a commotion between Al Ataiqi, Manny Ott and Rob Gier.

Azkals Head Coach Hans Weiss finally yielded to call of having a substitute and fielded Misagh Bahadoran.

However, in the 84th minute, Neil Etheridge anticipated Jumah's attempt and left the goal post open. However, Jonsson failed to stop it, and gave Kuwait its second goal in the game.

Caligdong was substituted by Ian Araneta in the 89th minute. However, Araneta wasn't able to maximize his presence and Al-Azraq was determined to park the bus. The final whistle was blown and it officially ended the Azkals' campaign for the World Cup Qualifiers.

Despite winning, Kuwait had good words for the Philippines. "To be honest, you have very good players and team, but sometimes when you crush, [and] maybe because we have more experience [we had the edge], but I hope you will be one of the 10 best teams in Asia," said the Kuwait Assistant Coach Abdul Azis Hammad. Meanwhile, Head Coach Goran Tufegdzic said that he opted to maximize his bench thus explaining his often substitution. Meanwhile, he believed that they can surpass the third round once their opponent is known.

Meanwhile, Weiss expressed that this game against Kuwait showed how physical and tough a World Cup qualifier can be. Though the team needs a rest, looking forward to their next challenges, particularly in Thailand and the South East Asian Games in Indonesia. "This is a growing process for the team. If it was a year ago, [the result] could have been very different," he said. He expressed that we can develop a good team through more foreign trainings and getting bigger pool of players now that we can represent the country in a good level.
